Carol Nolan suspended by Sinn Féin

Sinn Féin TD Carol Nolan was today suspended from the party after she voted against legislation to allow for the referendum on the Eighth Amendment.

Last night in Dáil, Ms Nolan courageously voted against the party and the representatives around her by declaring, “I am proud to say that I have strong pro-life views”.

Sinn Féin supports repealing the Eighth Amendment, but Offaly TD Ms Nolan voted against the Referendum Bill in the Dáil.

A former Sinn Féin MLA has left the party over its stance on abortion.

Francie Brolly, a former assembly member for East Derry, retired as a Sinn Féin MLA in 2010.

His wife Anne, who served as a councillor in Limavady for nearly 15 years, left the party in 2016, also over its position on abortion.

In 2015, Sinn Féin changed its abortion policy to allow terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.

Sinn Féin TD claims abortion legalisation could lead to Eugenics

Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín has said he is worried introducing abortion into Ireland could lead to Eugenics.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Tóibín said abortion legalisation could see increased rates of abortion for children with Down syndrome.

He will attend a debate in the Dáil later on an Oireachtas Committee recommendation to have unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks.

Sinn Féin is the only major political party not allowing members a free vote on the issue.
