The referendum to Repeal the Eighth will be held on 25 May. This will then make it possible to pass legislation where women can have abortion on demand up to twelve weeks. The papers and airwaves are full of it, yet many of those commenting seem happy to talk about anything but the central issue and what it involves.

Kathy Sheridan on Alfie Evans and repeal of the Eighth

The case of the baby Alfie Evans is an interesting one. Essentially it involved a clash between the wishes of the parents and the wishes of the state and the medical profession. Alfie’s parents wanted to keep him on life support, the state and the doctors didn’t. It appears that the state and doctors won, despite widespread support for the parents’ stand.

Five questions about abortion

Today the south’s Supreme Court will meet, to listen to an appeal by the State against a High Court ruling last year that said the unborn child/foetus has rights beyond the protected right to life as stated in the Constitution. If the Supreme Court doesn’t overrule the High Court decision, this will probably complicate and delay the proposed referendum to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
